For over 30 years, Dogs for the Deaf has been rescuing dogs from shelters, professionally training them, and placing them nationwide and in Canada with people who can benefit from their special training. Dogs for the Deaf trains Hearing Dogs to alert people who are deaf or hard of hearing to environmental sounds around them, Autism Assistance Dogs to provide increased safety and emotional bonding for children with autism, and Miracle Mutts who provide emotional support, therapeutic benefits, and a reason to live to people with a variety of physical, mental, and emotional challenges. These dogs are placed free of charge with applicants who need their assistance. Dogs for the Deaf is a non-profit organization funded totally by donations.

Reef and Fierce

Samoyeds Reef and Fierce wear this ID Cape dog vests in the NAMI event.
Samoyeds Reef, Fierce, and their owner Diana Steele joined in an event for the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) by participating in a fund-raising walk. Their team raised the most money. The dogs were very popular and looked sharp as they wore their ID Cape dog vests. Fierce has his head turned so that you can't see his cape in this picture. This picture was taken after the walk. As you can see, it was a hot day. They'll be doing this again in May 2009.

Gordon and Leslie's 6½ year old black Lab Shadow has multiple tasks to perform. She is an assistance dog who was trained for Hearing Dog work. As most Hearing Dogs, she alerts Gordon & Leslie to various sounds they would otherwise miss, such as fire alarms, the telephone ringing, buzzers or timers for cooking, people knocking at the door, or any other noises that aren't what she feels is normal in her world. She also does reach Assistance Dog work for them. Shadow will pick up things they drop and go get things that are a bit low and cause them pain to bend over and get.

Gordon says, "She makes the quality of our lives so much better and that's so important to us. Shadow does many things for us other than being a wonderful loving companion. Shadow is just incredible!"

This is Jim Miller's 2½ year old Golden Retriever, Amber. Jim describes her as "Very intelligent, motivated, curious, helpful, playful, a quick learner, and of course pretty." She sounds like the perfect working companion!

Amber is a Service Dog trained specifically for persons with seizure disorders. A Seizure Alert Dog notifies someone when a seizure is pending, sometimes as far as 30 minutes in advance. That person can get to a safer place, sit down, notify a bystander, and prepare for an oncoming attack. The dog can either standby or go get help if necessary. Amber’s ID Cape and patch inform the public about her important job.

Both dogs went from an animal shelter into a new and full life of service. Montana is wearing her ID Cape dog vest and one of our working dog patches (an old design we no longer carry).

Susan wrote the following note about Montana’s gear: We sure do like the ID Capes you guys made for us and Montana does too. When I take it out of her travel bag she gets excited because she knows it means she's getting ready for work.
